The Solar Park South is borne from the curves of the decommissioned autostrada, sweeping across Calabria, punctuating the landscape. So poignant is its stature that the project has been conceived as an emblem to both its past and future. At its crux, the proposal uses its eponymous location in creating a renewable solar energy resource. Shadowing the 6.5km road from Scilla to the Sfalassa viaduct, a string of highly polished photovoltaic panels covering the width of the road deck will generate vast amounts of energy as it shimmers in the landscape. Beneath is the Solar Walk, a shaded route for the public that offers stunning views and which leads to the Solar Centre. From its position overlooking almost the entire SPS, the centre’s power hub captures the solar string’s incoming energy. The Solar Walk breaks out to café space, viewing deck, gondola station to Bagnara, and ultimately, an elevated Skywalk; offering a stunning panorama over the whole landscape and coastline of the SPS |
