| UNETERNAL CITY > LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA |
11. International Architecture Exhibition üOut There: Architecture Beyond Buildingsý
Uneternal City is a specific section dedicated to the city of Rome. 30 years after Roma Interrotta, Aaron Betsky has asked 12 Italian and international offices to re-imagine the metropolitan area of Rome. Uneternal City propose to verify the theme underlying the whole Biennale by applying it to the capital: what is town planning today? How is being transformed and how we can transform the contemporary city? But above all: on what does the quality of life of its inhabitants depend? On what does the quality of public and meeting spaces depend? What can make our cities more pleasant to live in and attractive?
The exhibition intends to verify new instruments for the transformation of the contemporary city, looking for a different urban planning that does not start from an abstract plan on the table, but is able to grow and develop like a benevolent virus, deforming what already exists. The projects will mainly focus on peripheral areas, in that not clearly defined space between city and countryside; far from the historic, so-called eternal centre. Territories without form, intermediate lands: places where unplanned huts alternate with voids. Residues of natural landscape interrupting dense physical and human fabrics: places in which social and spatial relations are unusual, indefinable or simply difficult to categorize. The projects will take note of the confused and vital character of these areas, not to deny their existence, but to try to make them explicit and aware. In this sense Uneternal City sets itself apart from its historic precedent: while the projects drawn up in 1978 for Roma Interrotta concentrated on the historical city, proposing utopian and elitist visions, Uneternal City proposes an interpretation no longer linked to the fixity of the constructed city but profoundly interested in the transformation of the contemporary city and its relationship with history and memory.
What is happening to the Eternal City? Within this scenario, every office has chosen an area or theme to explore. No global or all-comprehensive visions, but rather contagious and overflowing projects that follow as yet untrodden roads and which exploit and represent new spaces and urban fabrics. The intended image is that of a Rome of the future, in which architects open new observation points on the landscape, changing reality, with an often critical but sometimes enchanted eye.

| EVERYVILLE ONLINE STUDENT COMPETITION > LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA |
Community beyond Place, Civic Sense beyond Architecture
The Fondazione La Biennale di Venezia strongly believes in the younger generation, in its creative talents and the force of its ideas.
Throughout the years this conviction has been translated into dedicated initiatives and projects. On the occasion of the 11th International Architecture Exhibition (Venice, September 14th > November 23rd, 2008) this conviction is represented by the EveryVille online competition, an extraordinary opportunity for all kind of university students (and those who are graduated in 2008) from around the world to be directly involved in the organisation of the Venice Biennale.
The competition calls for the preparation of an idea-project based on the theoretical-critical text written by the curator of the 11th International Architecture Exhibition, Aaron Betsky. However, this time the element of challenge and stimulation lies in the fact that the works selected by a prestigious Jury will become an integral part of the 11th Exhibition, to be presented in a dedicated section. The competition thus represents a unique opportunity and an unrepeatable occasion to present your work, coupled with the satisfaction of presenting it during what is now considered to be the most important architectural exhibition in the world.
