The Thematic Pavilion is a major and permanent facility of the Yeosu Expo 2012. The aim of soma’s design was not to visually represent the Expos theme „The living Ocean and Coast“ but implement its agenda through a sustainable climate design and the bionic principle of the kinetic media facade. We experience the Ocean mainly in two ways, as an endless surface and in an immersed perspective as depth. This plain/profound duality of the Ocean motivates the building’s spatial and organisational concept. Continuous surfaces twist from vertical to horizontal orientation and define all significant interior spaces. As a counter part to the virtual multi-media shows of the Thematic Exhibition taking place in its interior exhibition spaces, the bionic façade like the overall building emphasize the manifold potentials of analogue architectural effects.
