The vision for this architecture competition, by designing a house type for a new development on the edge of the City of Cambridge, started from a clear analysis of the history of mew houses typology. We introduced the basic traditional characters, implying detail types and materiality which once refined the fabric. Searching along the history, we found out different elements categories, such as openings with coach-doors and entrance doors at the ground level and winch-doors at the second level, or roofs and party-walls up stands. The encoding of these elements in a contemporary design language was the challenge as our main approach. The final proposal includes two typologies (80sqm and 100sqm) with the use of aluminium panels and fins, while keeping the traditional image with bricks and cast-iron detail elements. Upstairs terraces and backyard gardens completed the relation between indoor and outdoor spaces.
