Research Project & "INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTS WORKSHOP - Proposals for the embankment of river Daugava development" (Third Prize)
Riga was once the leading Hanseatic city in the Balitc States. Its river Daugava functioned as an important place for exchange and trade and at the same time as the most significant urban activity space. Today, the Daugava appears as an empty space between two opposite banks: the historical city center of Riga on the one side, and a heterogeneous, neglected development structure on the other side of the river. The project XOVER shows a way to read and interpret the city on the basis of two crossing urban lines, which hold and demonstrate the relevant potentials of Riga´s development. XOVER generates the development and direct connection of the opposite bank to the historical city center of Riga. The potential of the option area Daugava is re-activated in a dialogue of two vital parts of the city. |
