0504 parachute pavilion Coney Island, NYC
Most buildings that have been conceived and designed as “pavilions” have in relation of form and purpose is the key-element through which characterizing their uniqueness. Our figure is abstracted from the compact volume generated by the vertical extrusion of the boundary line. The pavilion is horizontal and characterized by compactness as to contrast with the three-dimensional, permeable structure of the Jump, to which the pavilion is perceived as an extension to its solid, colourful base. A movement path is the plinth to the articulation of internal space, connecting the various levels of the entrances (boardwalk and car-park level) and stimulating the exploration of the pavilion without compromising the activities confined within topological volumes. Translucent and opaque surfaces reveal floor-level variations as to emphasize movement and the plastic, warped volumes, a metaphor of the subtraction that have generated them.
