| there is said to be a historical conception of writing as supplement (to the spoken word) and of ornament as supplement (to the work, the building) which would allow us not to establish equivalents, but rather to see such peripherisations as culturally identical. writing and ornament would thus share the same properties of artifice and addition, but also of substitution. (un)-scripting, a project for a synagogue for a jewish community in new jersey sets out to raise, in critical terms, the issue of scriptural pattern as distinct from historical and theoretical suppression of formal ornament. |
