University of Johannesburg Arts Centre
Johannesburg, South Africa
The University of Johannesburg Arts Centre can be interpreted as a gesamt kunst werk where the orchestration of architecture, outside spaces, land- and sculptural-art and poetry results in a setting where the appreciation of the visual and dramatic arts is enhanced. The landscape design acts as both link and visual foreground to the existing campus buildings. The main elements of the design are a spill-out space for theatre and gallery goers, a water feature, timber pathway and lawn embankment. The water feature was designed in collaboration with artist Marco Cianfanelli. A land art installation by Strijdom van der Merwe for the opening of the centre, lends an ephemeral quality to the landscape.
