House in Komae
TOKYO
This is a house for a couple and their child, now under planning in a densely built urban district of houses with small yards. Positioning the building to occupy the entire corner site of 100 square meters, I made one half a living room and the other half a yard. Below the yard, I created a private semi-underground space containing the private rooms and water-related functions. The yard is somewhat higher than the road. It therefore spreads before one at eye level when one sits on a sofa in the living room. While reclining in bed or in the bathtub, one can enjoy a view of the yard through an overhead skylight. Although there is just one yard, windows face on it from various perspectives, so each space in the house seems to have its own yard. Being provided with furniture and equipment, the yard is a part of daily life in the house. At same time, as a yard and, moreover, a roof, it constitutes the external appearance of the house.
