House in a Forest
Nagano
This is a weekend house with a gable roof standing in a lush natural is a weekend house with a gable roof standing in a lush natural forest. Its site lies between a walking path on the north and stream on the south. Beneath the gable roof, the living room, kitchen, and five other rooms of varying sizes each have a gable ceiling. An attic placed between the gable roof and gable ceiling delivers soft light and the shadows of trees to the rooms below, through a skylight in the roof peak. The attic also performs as a stairwell leading to a viewing platform placed on the rooftop, and as a window through which to look up to views of sky above the opposite side of the house. In each room, one looks up to the attic to see light and scenic imagery projected into that space, as if it were a giant reflector board. Because of the roof’s spacious size, one can fully enjoy the forest environment while inside a small room.
