The original house, designed in the early 90's, formally supported the idea of a vernacular cottage, therefore neglecting the advantages of the location (on the coast of the Atlantic), and functionally relying on a reinterpretation of typical plans for 'standard' houses of the time. Our Clients requirements were related to their intention to use the house as a permanent home: increased living areas, definition between levels of privacy, more light and open views to the ocean. They were inspired by timber log construction which we distilled in the final design as a carefully crafted form, clad in cedar, and energy efficient through both the use of timber frame construction (low embodied energy) and in terms of thermal efficiency in use (high levels of insulation). Volumes that are being added change the configuration of the house- the accent is moved to the rear of the house, opening it's back to the ocean.
