The existing school building constructed 20yrs ago had not since been upgraded with the specialised remedial teaching areas required by the current curriculum. The requirement to provide these generated the plan of the extension. The cross-section of the existing school is mimicked in the extension, with the ‘pod’ supporting the original concept of a succession of pitched roof ‘houses’ attached to a flat-roofed circulation spine. That existing from is distilled, rescaled, and clad in stainless steel to make a contemporary statement. In addressing the playground, the pod assumes the scale and novelty of a playhouse. In a location in which quickly changing weather is taken for granted, the appearance of the extension continually changes throughout the day, as light and rain play on it. Within a limited budget, the e-pod provides a playful and continually changing addition to the built fabric of the town.
