Westerpark
's-Hertogenbosch - special prize
Westerpark is the the largest city park of ‘s-Hertogenbosch. The site is situated near the city centre at low level compared to its surrounding level. One of the main demands for the Westerpark was the need for water retention. The plan is based on a concept of islands that creates a powerful spatial framework providing opportunities for different kinds of use and changes of use in time. By means of this open ended planning, conditions are given for the development of the park related to time, trends and social changes without the need of changing the spatial structure. The flexible use of the different islands gives the park a dynamic character. The abundance of water offers the opportunity to both separate and bind different functions within the park. Some of the island can’t be reached and can develop, by encouraging ecological development, into wild spaces in the city.
