Arnhem - special prize
The former grounds of the Vitesse football club in Arnhem, were converted in 1996 into a housing estate. Located on a slope between two country estates, the goal was to create a high-quality residential area of landscape character. The natural topography involves differences of 24 metres, which had to be overcome. That is why Buro Lubbers made use of rock in gabion form, originally as means of holding cut ground, but later as a leitmotif. Gabions enclose front gardens, face the retaining walls of higher ones, and help form façades. As a result they form a link between architecture and outdoor space, providing the project with a strong cohesive identity. The project was awarded several times in the Netherlands.
