This young family focused on a house and landscape that was in tune with their lifestyle. The architectural design centers around large ‘view ports’ from the interior toward the garden and beyond to the surrounding landscape. These borrowed views appear as ‘landscape paintings’ from inside the residence. The landscape absorbs all the water on site through bio swales and extensive dry creek systems. This element is even celebrated visually when a rocky swale flows under a glass bridge that connects the main house to the guest wing. Uniquely, there is no automated irrigation on the built landscape so the plan is to see how far the native planting can be pushed toward self sufficiency over time. The architecture and landscape form a strong connection with the local indigenous landscape and its subtleties - The family observes and embraces this dynamic relationship.
