MEDIASPACE/PUBLIC LIBRARY AND HARBOUR SQUARES
AARHUS - first prize
The brittle ice floes that glide and flow on the surface of the water inspire the architectural concept and design of the squares. The layout has a clear characteristic: the “skirts” or the “ice floes” fold out towards the water strategically at points where orientation and sunlight create natural pockets of activity. Following the framework outlined by the general masterplan, Europaplads, Toldbodplads and Harbour Square are visualised as one continuous public square; from the creek’s demarcation to the south to Nørreport to the north. This creates a strong visual link between the city, over the road and light rail, all the way to the edge of the water. At Europaplads, the paving slides under MEDIASPACE, creating Level 0.
