The competition imposed a delicate task of inserting a new, much bigger church next to the Romanesque one, running the risk of dwarfing the rest of the complex by its mass. That is why the new building is perpendicular to the old one, with its volume fractured horizontally and vertically by a system of local stone-clad walls. The pitched top roof is the same size as the old one, but differentiated in material and colour. The original design included local Mediterranean roof gardens on lower roofs, but they were never planted.
