AN ARCHITECTURE WHICH IS KIND TO THE EARTH
Tokyo 1999 - special prize
Japan, 1999 Central Glass competition: In modern times, as we have come to consume energy in massive quantities, we have also finally come to the realization that energy resources such as timber, coal and oil are indeed finite. Not only this, but we now understand that the massive consumption of these resources and energy sources produces waste products which have a serious effect on our human environment. Furthermore, we are conscious that we need to approach this problem not just from the standpoint of the human environment alone, but also from that of the natural environment and the global environment. From this realization the phrase "kind to the earth" was born, and the meaning of that phrase encompasses a sense not only of regret for the things that mankind has done in the past but also hope for the future.
