Zouwdal Developmental Strategy
Maastricht
The Zouwdal study examines the complexities of the border between Belgium and the Netherlands and traces a definitive plan for the development of the edge of Maastricht. Landscape becomes the guiding principle for spatial planning and thus preserves the essential structure of a five thousand year old agricultural history. The Dutch industrial areas must be linked to the Belgian areas through transport axes that open the possibility of a ring road around Maastricht West. The study presents several challenges for the future, the most important being the preservation of endangered plant and animal species that need open space in order to survive.
