Crown Terrace
Elephant & Castle, London - first prize
Crown Terrace is a slight evolution of the London terrace house, providing the adaptive potential and additional amenity more commonly associated with the English semi. The traditionally meager rear garden is replaced by an internal courtyard, substantially increasing the level of privacy and providing more rooms with direct access onto a secluded outdoor space. An accessible roof terrace doubles the level of private amenity and provides fallow space, ripe for permitted development. Two of the terraces are mirrored in section, ensuring the subsequently variegated facades define a strong edge to both the street and park. A brick wrap provides a unifying low-level façade, maintaining the robust familiarity of the local two storey terrace. Behind this façade, above the ground floor masonry, sit two storey timber boxes, clad to the residents requirements.
