Museum Contemporary Arts+Planning Exhibition(2007)
Shenzhen, China
MOCAPE questions the culture of how we read and see things - what is factual data, what is artistic re-presentation or artefact? The map is the protagonist of this conceptual thinking with two and three-dimensional maps being the primary relay of information in the PE, as well as abstract architectural artefacts that shape the fabric of the museum. The map is also the most “contemporary” abstract re-presentation of a city. MOCAPE is metaphorically the map of Shenzhen draped over the palm of a hand. The “palm” comprises all the building blocks including the exhibition spaces (horizontal MOCA slab and vertical PE block), while the map shelters the entire development forming a lyrical veil of information and artifact. The relationship of MOCAPE and Shenzhen city is made manifest five times at different scales throughout the building, providing a clearer reading of the relationship between artefacts and environment.
