New Headquarters for Wexford County Council (2006)
Wexford, Ireland
The new headquarters offices are positioned to enable an easy relationship between each department and the public, whilst taking advantage of the natural characteristics of the landscape. Two main themes, the ‘inhabitable landscape’ and ‘horizon markers’ are strategically applied to the site. The building comprises a series of single storey rectangular linear spaces of offices and a car park beneath existing grass contour roofs (inhabitable landscape) with four pavilions (horizon markers) sitting above the landscape. Like music notes, an array of light troughs punctures this calm landscape applying a tempo to the ground to allow human inhabitation. These trench-liked courtyards allow natural light and ventilation to office spaces. The natural contours are retained almost in entirety making the site into a grand external lobby and park space; the architecture nestles below the existing contours.
