In “d_u_w”, Marloes de Valk is telling the playful story of digital micro-organisms. Starting from a single seed, these strange and simple beings propagate very quickly to fill the whole space in which they multiply. They play their own score of “clicks” and small sounds that sparkle and move across evolving constructions and musical modulations. “d_u_w” is a hybrid creation between biology and electronic music. It explores L-systems as score for sound and image. L-systems are a mathematical formalism proposed by biologist Aristid Lindenmayer in 1968 as a foundation for an axiomatic theory of biological development. d_u_w starts with a single seed and a set of rules that define how to grow from that seed.
