21 flat apartment
Cambridge
The design of the building was driven by a desire to create a mix of loft style apartments, that add to the diversity of the unit types on offer across the site. The building is made up of flats and maisonettes. One storey ground floor flats are raised half a storey to provide under croft parking and screened with timber louvers for privacy and as an acoustic buffer. The two-storey maisonettes interlock to provide each unit with an east-west aspect, double height space, cross ventilation, and allowing light to penetrate the entire home. A sheltered ‘outdoor room’ is provided in the form of an L-shaped balcony providing a continuation of interior and exterior. The wall elements are always located to the north of the balcony to provide shelter from prevailing winds. The variety of flat types generates a naturally varied fenestration interspersed with the L-balconies creating an animated, shaded facade. Green copper cladding was chosen to camouflage the building in summer and bring colour to the street in winter when the trees are stripped of their leaves.
