THE SUPREME COURT OF ICELAND
Reykjavík, Iceland - first prize
The new building for the Icelandic Supreme Court is located on a low hill in the centre of Reykjavík. the lot is presently a car park demarcated by roads on three sides and to the south by the classical national library building. To the north the street line is held by the state ministries building, Arnarhváll, and to the east is the National Theatre with its dominant black fly-tower. an open grassed area lies to the west, opening the site to the Atlantic Ocean. The proposal occupies the full width of the northern half of the site. This siting reinforces the street line of the disjointed road, Lindargata, at the critical point where it opens towards the sea. the southern part of the site is offered back to the city as a sheltered garden, a precious resource in northern latitudes.
