IIT Students Center
Chicago, USA - first prize
Two infrastructural elements divide the IIT Campus into an academic and a residential area. By extending both sides finger-like into a common middle zone, a seam is created, which functions as an integrating centre. The seam contains a strip a public buildings - a subway station, a shopping centre and sports facilities - satisfying the neighbourhood's needs for infrastructure thus weaving the campus into its surrounding. The student center integrates itself in the strip of public buildings as the seam between academic and residential areas of the campus. Hans Schaefers Award 1998 - German Architects Federation
