Roof Covering and Antiquarium of a Roman Thermae
Catania
The roof covering is designed to protect the archaeological Roman thermal remains discovered in piazza Dante and, at the same time, to create an antiquarium used for permanent exhibition of the main artifacts found in this ancient site. This covering maintains the historical square’s level – the so called ‘piano dei benedettini’ – restoring the context level as well as it appeared before the archaeological excavations. The new volume is so “contained” under the basement level of the Monastery façade in order to preserve the historical image of the place and to remember symbolically the idea of “basement”, as a substructure or foundation of new city.
